Portulaca is my favorite flower. This composition is one of a circle. An imaginary circle drawn from the large bloom towards the middle and top to the small pink bloom to the left to the tiny orangy bloom back to the pink bloom at the bottom of the photograph. A complete circle for your eye to follow round and round. Also the larger bloom tends to catch your eye more because, well, it’s bigger.

Here is another photograph of the rock garden from 3 days ago. Only I chose a different camera angle. I have place one single large rock as a background, rosy sedum to the right and merigolds in the center. Although the merigolds are much smaller than the other items in the photograph, they still tend to draw the eye because they are a much brighter color.
Also, the large rosy sedum on the the right would have made the picture look lop sided if it weren’t for the leafy plant included in the left side of the photograph. In other words, it would have had too much visual weight on the right without something on the left to offset it.

Here’s a cool dog with the shades on. I tried to balance the photo’s background by putting flowers on each side of the dog. I covered up the houses in the background as much as possible with the tree. The dog is offset slightly from the center giving it a subtle feeling of being dynamic.

Ever seen the plant hens and chicks bloom? Here’s what they look like. It’s leaning to one side a lot. I suppose that gives me a diagonal line adding a dynamic quality to the photograph. The intersection point between the stem and the concrete adds a focal point to the photograph keeping your eye on the image.

I suppose you could call this a rock garden. Although the rocks are huge. Not your usual stepping stones. But then, this is not your usual photo blog of high quality photographs either. Sounds rather fitting.
In this photograph the top edges of the flowers form an arc. This arc is repeated and mirrored in the curvature of the large rocks. The imaginary lines these curves represent intersect at different places. One rock’s edge intersects a flower’s edge and so on. This helps guide the eye around the photograph.
